Lisbon is a truly unique destination: it’s one of the oldest cities in Western Europe (more so than even Rome), the westernmost city in Europe, and home to one of the continent’s most important ports. Given this long history, it’s no surprise that Lisbon tourism offers such a wealth of things to see, from Gothic cathedrals to Post Modern art galleries, all surrounded by the Atlantic breeze and a warming sun. Lisbon is known as the City of Seven Hills and each hill offers a different cultural experience and amazing view of the city. Many choose to start their Lisbon holidays
in the central Baxia district which you’ll find many of the city’s most beautiful squares, museums, and arches. Those who travel to Lisbon in search of history and culture would do well to visit the Belem district, a historic zone once inhabited by Portugal’s conquistadors and home to major monuments like the sprawling Jeronimos Monastery and the iconic Belem Tower.

Holidays in Lisbon can also mean long nights of eating and drinking and that’s when you should head to Barrio Alto, a young alternative area full of casual restaurants and bars serving caipirinhas and mojitos on the street. Of course, you can’t say you've been on holiday in Lisbon without attending a Fado show in one of Barrio Alto’s taverns. Another bohemian area is the Alfama district surrounding the Castle of São Jorge. You could spend an entire day wandering the narrow streets, popping into impromptu art galleries, and savoring the views from the cafes.

Finally, your Lisbon holiday doesn't have to be limited to just downtown; there are plenty of quick and rewarding day trips from Lisbon to be had. Try heading to Sintra to see one of Europe’s most magical palaces, or head to nearby Cascais to enjoy a bit of sun and sand during your Lisbon vacation. The variety of sights, sounds, and tastes is what Lisbon is all about. So don’t rush around, but rather take your time and enjoy every drop of this historic city by the sea.
