Intangibile cultural heritage of humanity
Zibibbo means grapes in Arabic. Pantelleria is covered in rocky fields filled with 100 year plus zibibbo vines sheltering in small hollows of volcanic soil. These grapes are used to produce the outstanding, honey flavored passito wine. In 2014, UNESCO listed Pantelleria under the intangible cultural heritage of humanity category for the cultivation of these vines.
This type of production is considered to be viticoltura eroica, since water is scarce, the work is manual, the yield is low and the technique requires the creation of a microclimate for each vine to protect it from the harsh conditions.
