Winthrop Cemetery

Aunque en Provincetown hay tres pequeños cementerios, sin duda el más mágico y especial es el cementerio de la calle Winthrop, situado a tan solo un pequeño paseo a pie del centro de esta ciudad que es la capital de Cape Cod. La particularidad de este cementerio, y que lo hace tan especial es que es el que contiene las tumbas más antiguas, por lo que está considerado el cementerio más antiguo de toda la ciudad. El cementerio de la calle Winthrop data del siglo XVIII (se cree que se inició concretamente en torno al año 1723) y en su interior descansan los restos mortales de personas que murieron en Provincetown entre los siglos XVIII y XIX. Pasear por los cementerios antiguos de Estados Unidos es una auténtica gozada, ya que se tratan de grandes explanadas de hierba verde y monte en las que descansan bajo miles de losetas de piedra y mármol los antiguos habitantes de la ciudad. Son lugares con mucha historia y en donde se aprecia una tranquilidad pasmosa. Con tanta historia no es de extrañar que estos cementerios contengan carteles informativos donde cuentan historias y curiosidades del lugar, y en este caso, el cementerio de la calle Winthrop no es una excepción. Llama la atención como en algunas lápidas no pone el nombre de la persona que está enterrada allí sino que se limita a poner “Madre” “Padre” o Hijo” o simplemente “Joven”. Son varias las familias enterradas juntas que pueden verse por allí y que están señaladas de esta forma tan curiosa.

Although there Provincetown three small cemeteries, arguably the most magical and special is the graveyard of Winthrop Street, located just a short walk from the center of this city which is the capital of Cape Cod. The particularity of this cemetery and that makes it so special is that is the one that contains the oldest tombs, which is considered the oldest cemetery in the whole city. The Winthrop Street Cemetery dates from the eighteenth century (believed to be specifically started around the year 1723) and inside lie the mortal remains of people who died in Provincetown between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Strolling through the old cemeteries in America is a real treat, since they are large concourses of green grass and bush in which rest under thousands of stone and marble tiles of the ancient inhabitants of the city. They are places with lots of history and where an astonishing tranquility is appreciated. With so much history it is no wonder that these cemeteries contain information signs which tell stories and curiosities of the place, and in this case, the cemetery Winthrop Street is no exception. It draws attention as some tombstones not put the name of the person who is buried there but simply to put "Mother," "Father" and Son "or simply" Young ". Several families buried together that can be seen there and they are marked in this way so curious.
