Un palazzo di metà settecento dal passato aristocratico, dimora di campagna di una famiglia nobile langarola, divenuto negli anni 40' del Novecento residenza famigliare e cantina d'invecchiamento della - a quei tempi nata da poco - Casa Vinicola Mascarello. Michele Mascarello, classe 1901, bisnonno di chi vi scrive, aveva deciso qualche anno prima, precisamente nel 1927, di compiere un azzardato e decisivo cambiamento nello stile di vita della famiglia passando dall’essere semplici contadini a viticoltori e commercianti. Da allora, in questo palazzo di Via San Martino, l'antica salita che porta all'omonima Chiesa di La Morra, non si è mai smesso di produrre vino. Anche se l'edificio, dall'alto dei suoi tre piani, da fuori appare solido e austero, l'enorme portone d'epoca riccamente intarsiato (in ogni piemontese batte un cuore "barocco" e le conseguenze, qui nelle Langhe, le trovi un po' ovunque) invita a sbirciare all'interno del palazzo: ed ecco un cortiletto che non ti aspetti, intimo, fiorito, le porte antiche, un'edera secolare che vuole nascondere i muri gialli, la scala buia a quei tempi ad uso della servitù e l'elegante scalone affrescato da Giovanni Savio (1863-1950), recentemente restaurato, che portava agli alloggi nobiliari. Si trova qui, al piano terra, la sala degustazione, dove è possibile assaporare e acquistare i vini di Langa (Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera...) prodotti dalla famiglia Mascarello; è uno spazio grande, dedicato all'amante del vino, che profuma di mosto, di legno e di Storia: le vecchie fotografie, gli antichi manifesti pubblicitari, le botti e le bottiglie impolverate, insomma tutto ciò che testimonia quel passato a cui chi ama il vino, e chi lo fa, non smette di mai ispirarsi. Una piccola, angusta porta del cortile che non noteresti invece conduce...sottoterra! Proprio qui infatti, qualche decina di metri sotto il livello della strada, si trovano le grandi, antiche e umide cantine, costantemente a temperatura di 12-15 gradi (garanti dagli spessi muri di mattone) che da sempre sono il luogo ideale per far invecchiare i vini: nelle grandi botti di Rovere di Slavonia, nelle barriques, riposano i vari Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo. E' qui che a Ottobre, finita la vendemmia, lavora la pigiatrice, si riempiono i tonneaux e soprattutto si pazienta che il mosto diventi prezioso vino. La cantina e la sala degustazione sono entrambe visitabili (preferibilmente su prenotazione). L'ultima settimana di Luglio la cantina Mascarello, insieme ad altre due cantine storiche di La Morra ospita "Barolo Night" (www.barolonight.com), importante evento enogastronomico: una cena preparata dagli chef dei migliori ristoranti delle Langhe, nei locali delle cantine più antiche e suggestive di La Morra, passeggiando per la Morra con jazz live come sottofondo musicale.

Although the building, from its three floors, from the outside looks solid and austere, the enormous period doorway of the richly inlaid (in any Piedmont beats the heart of "baroque" and the consequences, here in the Langhe and they are available a little 'everywhere) invites you to peek inside the palace: and behold, a yard that you do not expect, cozy, flowery, antique doors, ivy centuries-old who wants to hide the yellow walls, the dark staircase in those days to use the servants and the elegant staircase frescoed by Giovanni Savio (1863-1950), recently restored, which led to housing nobility. It is here, on the ground floor, the tasting room, where you can taste and purchase the wines of the Langhe (Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera ...) produced by the Mascarello family, it is a big space, dedicated lover wine, smelling of wine, wood and History: the old photographs, old posters, barrels and bottles dusty, everything that bears witness to that past that loveth wine, and those who do not never ceases to inspire. A small, narrow courtyard door that leads instead you will not notice ... underground! Right here in fact, a few tens of meters below street level, there are the great, ancient and damp cellars, constantly at a temperature of 12-15 degrees (guarantors with thick brick walls) that have always been the ideal place to grow old the wines in large Slavonian oak barrels, the barrels, lie the various Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo. And 'here that October, after the harvest, the crusher works, fill the barrels and above that is patient must become precious wine. The winery and tasting room are both open to visitors (preferably by appointment). The last week of July, the Mascarello cellar, along with two other historic cellars of La Morra hosts "Barolo Night" (www.barolonight.com), an important food and wine event: a dinner prepared by the chefs of the best restaurants in the Langhe, on the premises of cellars oldest and most striking of La Morra, walking around the Morra with live jazz as background music.
