Temple hosts to royal ceremonies
The temple Wat Xieng Thong is one of the loveliest in Luang Prabang Laos and around, and also one of the most visited. It was constructed in the 16th century by King Saysethathirath, and has the architecture of Buddhist temples, such as sloping roofs and gilded decoration where elements predominate. The temple was used for royal ceremonies and the bones of the Sisavangvong king are there. Now, it is used on certain sad occasions, and Wat Mai temple is also used which is the second most important. It has a similar structure but the roof is not as sneaky as Xieng Thong. Both temples are situated in the heart of the city, near the Royal Palace.
When we went to Luang Prabang we were lucky enough to witness one of the most traditional ceremonies of the city, where Buddhists receive gifts from all kinds of politicians. This is a public event attended by hundreds of people and is really interesting. At these temples one can also see some small venues that are home to lots of Buddhas. It is a very important place for Buddhists and there are always people there. Another striking thing is the Royal Palace Museum. It is a kind of real museum next to the temple in which are stored stunningly beautiful golden gondolas that were used by royalty for years.
