The oldest water tower in Berlin

Originally, the tower was used to supply water mainly to the district of Pankow, through one of the first piping systems that were built in the eastern part of the German capital. Like many of the places in this country, the Prenzlauer Water Tower also has a rather sad historical part. In a building adjacent to the tower itself, which originally functioned as a machine room, the first concentration camp of Nazi Germany was established in 1933. Currently, a small commemorative plaque can be seen on the site that briefly explains the importance of this place .

The water tower

The red brick water tower was built in 1877 by the Society of waterworks English instead of an old windmill. The structure 30 meters high, cylindrical, made of brick and known by the name of Hermann Dicker. During Nazism, the tower became a place of terror: the basements were in fact used as a torture chamber and later in the underground pipes were found 28 corpses. At the time of the GDR, the tower became a warehouse for canned fish, then was abandoned for many years and today it is home to apartments in great demand, while the basement has been transformed into exhibition spaces. definitely the element that stands out and features in this area of Prenzlauer Berg.
