Page è una piccola e giovane cittadina dell’Arizona, è stata fondata nel 1957, ed è conosciuta soprattutto per le splendide attrazioni che la circondano tra cui spicca l’Horseshoe Bend, che si trova lungo la Hwy 89 a circa 5 miglia a sud della città. Lungo la strada trovi un unico cartello ‘Horseshoe Bend Overlook’, che ti indica una strada bianca che ti porta dritta ad uno spazio adibito a parcheggio, l’ingresso è gratuito. Lasciata la macchina bisogna proseguire a piedi per un trim lungo circa ¾ di miglio (1.200 metri). Si inizia con una piccola salita ed una volta in cima si apre una vallata con al centro una enorme buca, la strada è tutta in discesa, si cammina su di un sentiero di sabbia che verso la fine si trasforma in dura pietra arenaria, tutto intorno un’infinità di piccoli cespugli che per metà son secchi. Il sole ti accompagna implacabile, il caldo è soffocante, ma ciò che più impressiona sono le persone che tornano indietro, i bambini praticamente piangono tutti, gli adulti hanno il volto sconvolto, qualcuno barcolla, senti ripetere le lamentele di sempre ‘laprossimavoltacivienidasolo, ‘iosonovenutainvacanzamicaailavoriforzati’ e così continuando, oddio cosa ci aspetta? Finalmente si arriva a destinazione ed all’improvviso la terra ti si apre sotto i piedi e ti trovi sulla sommità di un canyon, un cerchio perfetto, è il fiume Colorado che compie quasi un giro completo che ricorda, per l’appunto, un ferro di cavallo, al centro si erge una roccia a due livelli dal profilo spezzato. Rocce lisce che verso la parte alta cambiano di fisionomia, assomigliano ad una enorme catasta di cartoni. Qua e là qualche grossa pietra in bilico che ti vien da chiederti come ci sia finita lì, la osservi con attenzione e sembra volerti prendere in giro. Uno spettacolo bellissimo, si rimane immobili a fissare affascinati il panorama, chissà come gli è venuto in mente al fiume di fare tutto sto giro, sarà forse un po’ vanitoso? Ti fermi un attimo a guardare gli uccelli planare tra le correnti del cielo, osservi le increspature del fiume cercando di capirne il verso di scorrimento, ti riempi le orecchie del silenzio che aleggia nell’aria. Non c’è fotocamera capace di fermare una immagine come questa. Si ritorna indietro, quasi per incanto quella che all’andata era una piacevole discesa si trasforma in un’infernale salita :-) La fatica comincia a farsi sentire, si fa ricorso alle ultime riserve d’acqua. C’è la tentazione di tagliare le curve, è più ripido, ma si accorcia la strada. Ma è un’idea malsana che non si deve mettere in atto e non solo perché comunque lo sforzo aumenta, ma soprattutto perché anche in questo ambiente desertico esiste un equilibrato ecosistema e quello che può sembrare una innocente impronta se la vai a sommare a tutte le persone che potenzialmente potrebbero passare di là porterebbe ad un rapido degrado di tutto l’ambiente circostante. Se passate da queste parti trovane un’oretta per far visita a questo sito, ne sarete ampiamente ripagati e, credetemi, non c’è descrizione o foto che possa rendere giustizia a questa meraviglia.
