1 review of Vikos Gorge

Northern Greece

The Vikos Gorge is one of the most stunning areas of northern Greece. It is 12 km long and 900 meters deep, it starts in the town of Monodendri, located at 1090 meters altitude, and it ends in two villages, Megalo Papingo and Mikro Papingo. Each year hundreds of hikers approach this gorge with its spectacular views and surrounding nature. There are several routes so it all depends on your physical form at the time. Just outside Monodendri is the descent into the gorge. It's steep but interesting by having diverse vegetation. I took the route in January and was amazed to find totally different areas.

Suddenly you could find in a forest full of trees and vegetation and within half an hour you got to a place full of rocks and ice like the North Pole of Greece. Once the descent is completed there is a walk of about 4 hours on a trail that takes you up to Mikro Papingo or Megalo Papingo, which is two miles and is larger. Overall the route is 8 hours, this must be taken into account so that you don't walk at night. If you leaving the car in Monodendri you need to plan how to return to it. What we did was get to Vikos and the bar owner took us (taxis are as individuals) to Monodendri for 30 euros (not expensive for the distance). It is also very funny because in this area the people do not usually speak English and you have to make yourself understood by gestures.
