Vihren

We spent the first half of August at the shelter. We arrived at 4 and the kitchen doesn't work, neither breakfast nor dinner are provided and the dining room is not presentable as it has dirty, damaged furniture. I have pictures to prove it. It is a shame that after such stunning surroundings you reach this site which looks so tacky and cramped. It is amazing to see the photos that are hanging there a few months ago, it doesn't seem like the same place. A real shame. The rooms are neat, but the toilets have latrines. Only a shower which is switched off in the morning, has warm water. Grievous.

We had to leave at 4 pm to go to a campsite to eat and buy breakfast.

Ideal for exploring the mountains of Pirin Base

It is one of the most accessible starting points and suitable to meet and enter the Pirin Mountain. Located on the top of the ski resort of Bansko, just where the road ends after 16 kilometers uphill from Bansko, lies this great mountain retreat, which commonly called "Vihren Shack". Well, the cabin has rather little, because in their units, consisting of 2-3 adjacent stone buildings, there are nearly 200 places to spend the night in addition to toilets, service, breakfast / lunch / dinner in a kind of restaurant etc. . Therefore, despite still being a mountain retreat that retains its essence mountaineering, especially in the modesty of the beds and areas, is a shelter that provides certain services and currencies that not all mountain huts have. Located 2000 meters above sea level, has a car park, that in times like summer is usually filled immediately, forcing visitors to park the car in a corner of the winding, narrow access road, which should be careful when performing maneuvers. Know if in winter the shelter is closed, but is likely due to its altitude and heavy snow falling in the area of Pirin massif. The fountain in front of the shelter is wonderful, and just behind the different paths start that well marked by yellow posts and colored markings on the stones, we allow different hiking routes using the shelter as a starting point. The shelter is the classic starting point to climb the summit of Mount Vihren, nearly 3000 meters of altitude, the highest of the range. So all those @ s for hikers who simply want to give a quiet ride plan, there are different alternatives, but one of the easiest and most accessible is the ascension, in just over half an hour, to Lake Okoto, which already allows enjoy spectacular scenery and environment. Yes, recommended to wear comfortable shoes and do not underestimate the mountain, because even being summer, the weather in these high mountain areas is very changeable and we can play tricks. In short, the Vihren refuge is an ideal choice as a starting point or base for excursions of all kinds in the Pirin Mountain, both for those who simply want to meet this high mountain "in tourist plan" (recommended in summer) , and for those who want to move up one of the beautiful limestone peaks of the area, which would certainly recommend and overnight stay at the shelter, to live the experience of the Bulgarian mountain in all its glory and authenticity.
