There's no need to be paranoid on the commuter trains in Mumbai. They aren't dangerous. There are certainly many people at the station on the dock and in the cars and it can be difficult for many to sneak out once you've arrived at your stop, but no more than in a crowded subway train in Paris. Except, there are not safe automatic closing doors, here there is no door! The trains are not air-conditioned so ventilation is necessary. Of course sometimes there are accidents but if you are careful and not in a rush, taking a commuter train is a good way to get around massive Bombay, especially since traffic is often so congested.
