One of the oldest squares
One of the oldest squares in the "new" city, outside the walls of the Citadel, is Praça Velha (Old Square), also known as Largo do Principal (by the presence of the Principal building) or Praça de São Vicente (because of the Church of San Vicente). It's a small cobbled square at the confluence of Combatentes da Grande Guerra (this leads directly to the Old Cathedral) and Serpa Pinto streets (rising to the Citadel). Vegetable markets and bullfights were held here in the seventeenth century. In the center is the monument to the dead from World War I, a sort of obelisk with commemorative plaques showing
The names of the victims, made in 1928.
