10 reviews of Vatnajökull

Unforgettable

The Skaftafell National Park ('https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/') is the largest in Iceland and Europe. The park, equivalent to over 12% of the country, is Iceland's most important conservation project. The main entrance is in Skaftafell, along the Vatnajökull glacier. You have to deviate about five kilometres from the Ring Road to reach the visitor centre with a small cafe, a park with picnic tables and a camping area. The Vatnajökull glacier is the largest in Iceland and one of the largest in Europe.

It has an area of 8,100 square kilometres, and is 1,000 meters thick at its thickest point. Under this vast sheet of ice, there are several volcanoes. The Guinness World Records has declared Vatnajökull as the place with the most visibility. From here, you can see Slættaratindur, the highest mountain on the Faroe Islands standing 550 kilometres away. We walked on this glacier all morning. You can book an English tour online with Mountain Guides at 'https://www.mountainguides.is/.' It was an unforgettable experience.

Stunning Jokulsarlon glacier

The most beautiful views are of the stunning Jokulsarlon glacier in that I think you can access multiple webcams to see jokulsarlon, geyser, Gullfoss, ... Live. Some occasionally are taken away for a few days, I suppose it's for maintenance.
