The border river
The Usumacinta is one of the greatest rivers in Mexico which serves as a border between Chiapas, Mexico and Peten, Guatemala. The river has always been of great importance, since it represents a highway in the area, isolated in both countries. Covered in vegetation and full of wildlife, it is easy to see hundreds of birds, howler monkeys and crocodiles on its shores. Nearby you can visit Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras, two archaeological sites of the Mayan civilization. It is one of the most important border crossings between the two countries, easy to negotiate with boatmen a small discount.
