An eternal flame
At the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, you’ll find the tomb of the unknown soldier with an eternal flame and a eternally vigilant guard. It was built after WWI at the behest of General Giulio Douhet.
The body of the Unknown Soldier was chosen by Mary Bergamas in the Austro-Hungarian town of Gradisca D'Isonzo. The body was that of a young man who had deserted the Austro-Hungarian army, joined the Regio Esercito (Italian Army), and lost his life in action during World Word I.
He was chosen from among 11 other bodies of unidentified soldiers and sailors of the Kingdom of Italy's armed forces. The body was transported from Aquileia to Rome, between October and November 1921.
