one of the most important teaching centers of the Russian Empire
The university was established in the year 1632 by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, in order to form the Lutheran clergy and government officials. By the year 1700, during the Great Northern War, the university remained closed. It was reopened again in 1802 and became one of the most important teaching centers of the Russian Empire.
