University Church of St Mary the Virgin

4 reviews of University Church of St Mary the Virgin

A nice church cafe

There aren't a lot of free things to do and see in Oxford (entering any building of the university has a charge of at least 2 pence, which allows you to walk through the little gardens and see the interior dining rooms). But this church is free, although if you want to climb the tower it will cost a couple of pounds to see the unique 360 degree view of Oxford. In medieval times, the church belonged to the university, and was built in the English Gothic style. During the time of Queen Mary Tudor, aka Bloody Mary, three Anglican bishops were tried here and burned at the stake in Broad Street, where you'll see a memorial cross today.
