Viterbo

The capital of Tuscia, a unique origin of the Etruscan civilization, has a treasure in the heart of town that has been preserved over the centuries, with a medieval wall that has kept the contemporary industrial area from the center, preventing architectural pollution. Viterbo is, historically, the perfect starting point for trips and excursions of archaeological and historical interest like roads that branch off along the route of the Via Francigena. The latter was covered for centuries by pilgrims from the north heading to Rome. The pilgrims themselves left riches in its wake, as the city was mandatory stop and the papal residence from the year 1255.
