Schnee, schnee, schnee!
Plan for a long day of ice and snow. Crossing large snow fields, trying to follow the footsteps left by previous hikers.
The two highlights of the day are the river crossings. There are no bridges. So take off your boots, strip down to your underwear and plunge thigh high into freezing waters as mini icebergs float downstream beside you. Watch young Spanish men weep. It is highly recommended to bring a pair of sandals with straps and hiking poles.
Despite the tough conditions this Nordic scenery offers solitude and a severe beauty.
Arriving at Tyssevassbu we discover the hut warden is sick and has left.
However a camaraderie soon builds between the hut inhabitants and we build a fire, fetch water from the frozen lake and perform house keeping tasks. I also try a Wasa Brunost sandwich from the pantry, addictive.
