A classic in Plaentxi
A “classic “restaurant in the Deba river basin that never disappoints. Located in the outskirts of Mount Karakate, in the Txarruka neighborhood, it’s a reformed farmhouse turned into a restaurant about 200 meters outside of the Palencia de las Armas (also known as “Placencias” or “Plaentxi” en Euskera).
It’s a 4-5 kilometer uphill drive from Palacencias along a curvy road. I’d definitely recommend you drive with caution both when heading up and coming back down. The paved road ends at the restaurant, which has plenty of parking space, but it tends to fill up.
You’ll have to call a head and to reserve a table, as we once made the trip up the mountain only to find there was no room at the restaurant. And, believe me, it’s a true task to have to head down the mountain with your stomach still growling for their delicious food.
A few years ago they had enlarged the dining room and made several other changes, like adding a bay window that looks over the valley and the Deba river. It’s a very traditional place, where you feel like you’re at home from the minute you walk through the door. The service is very kind and friendly, ready to help at any moment. Although there are special menus for groups, ordering from the menu of the day is the normal option.
The prices are pretty reasonable for the quantity and especially the quality of food they serve. The homemade croquettes are an almost obligatory entree, the various salads are an ideal option to share as an enter (the cod with vegetables is stupendous), and whatever grilled meat or fish is always an excellent choice.
The grill is located outside, in the street. I can assure you that you’ll find it irresistible when you walk by and see the steaks and other meats sizzling on the grill. The wine menu is comfortable in price. We can’t forget about the deserts. They’re homemade with original and modern touches. Even if you’re not a big desert fan, you have to try the “pantxineta” with hot chocolate sauce while there, as well as the strawberry infusion. They all have a special touch and are sure to surprise you.
In summary, although the restaurant is somewhat far from the center of town and the drive isn’t the easiest, it’s worth making the trip. And remember, make you reservations in advance to be sure of a table.
It’s a place the people from the surrounding Alto and Bajo Deba known very well, but it continues to be relatively unknown to those from out of town. Why would you like this restaurant? First, and most importantly, you’ll enjoy excellently prepared food with a modern touch at a reasonable price. There aren’t many restaurants in the area with the same price/quality relationship.
Secondly, it’s an escape from the town, in the middle of the mountains, surrounded by green meadows that fall into the Deba river basin, offering spectacular views.
The best part about Txurruka is that, in summer, you can eat you chop, steak, fish or eggs, or whatever your favorite dish might be, on the outside terrace. This truly is an authentic luxury.
