1 review of Transfiguration Monastery

Transfiguration Monastery

Excellent

The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Great Meteora Metamorphosis or as it is also known, was founded in 1380 by Athanasius and it is the biggest in the whole area. For me, during my trip to Greece, it was the one I was most drawn to. It comes from the town of Kalambaka walking down the road to Kastraki. I found that about 3 km of it is part of the Meteora (monasteries, that as this was built back in the fourteenth century, on these peaks that rise like pillars along the river valley in the region Pinios Thesalía, province Trikala, north of the town of Kalambaka). A staircase leads to the tower of the old Vrizones where there are some forklifts.

Stresses the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ and the frescoes that are in it, with a beautiful wooden iconostasis of the eighteenth century and the twelve-sided dome. Be sure to go to the refectory and to the treasure (icons of the Virgin of the XIV-XVI, reliquaries, illuminated liturgical scrolls the centuries XI-XIII century manuscripts ... X-XV) to see the scrolls and the library , Museum today. Some curious niches were cut in the rock where it was confined to the monks who did not follow the rules. The landscape is just beautiful there. You will enjoy the visito to Great Meteora, as well as to the entire area. I highly recommend it.
