San Martino della Battaglia belongs to Desenzano del Garda and got its name after the historic Battle of San Martin, in the War of Independence, where the forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia, lead by Vittorio Emanuele II alongside the Allies French under Napoleon III defeated the Austrians, led by Emperor Franz Joseph. The tower is 74 meters high and was constructed in the year 1880, opening its doors on October 15, 1893. It was built to honor the memory of Vittorio Emanuele II and those who fought for independence and the unification of Italy in the war of the years 1848-1870. The walls are filled with paintings of the time war and portraits of military leaders.
