East Temple

The temple Toji (temple of the east) guarded the south entrance of the city and was one of the three allowed Buddhist temples in Kyoto during the period Heian (approximately in 826). Today it is the only one standing and its pagoda is the tallest wooden structure in Japan, with five floors and 54.8 meters in height. As a curiosity, every day on the 21st of the month there is a market for antiques and collector"s items inside the temple complex.
