An exceptional site
If you're in Datong, it's probably for the Yungang Grottoes, such an exceptional site that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. If you're interested in Buddhism, you'll like it since there are dozens of caves with tens of thousands of Buddhas carved right into the rock. I'd recommend bringing a piece of paper with the name of the caves written in Chinese and just rent a taxi for the day. The caves are located just 20 kilometers from town, similar to the Hanging Temple, but in the opposite direction. The entrance fee is about 60 yuan (6 euros), but the price is well worth it.
If you come to Datong the main attraction is the Yungang caves, which are so exceptional that were classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Sight.
