Best BBQ on Earth

About 30 minutes from downtown Austin is The Saltlick, perhaps the world's top destination for barbecue lovers. The Saltlick is located in Driftwood, a small village in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, a land of green hills, hidden waterfalls and, of course, barbecue. If you pass through Texas, you simply can't miss it. The Saltlick is a partly open-air restaurant, something important when temperatures reach 100 + degrees in the summer. The meat is mainly beef and highlights are ribs, brisket, and sausage. Texas BBQ is unique: we cook it low and slow using lots of smoke and heat, not just fire.

The meat is marinated with a mixture of spices and cook for hours, with cooks mopping marinade over the meat every now and then. While the juice is absorbed into the meat, leaving it juicy and tender, sugars and spices are left out, creating a crispy and tasty crust thanks to the smoke. The sauce is the most incredible part though, a thick, sweet-salty-spicy affair, rich with tomato, meat drippings, and smoke. It is simply amazing. While there is a menu, I'd recommend getting your BBQ family style, meaning unlimited meat dishes, sauce, potato salad and coleslaw for a set price. Once you've finished a dish, waiters bring you a new one. It costs $ 20 / person. They do not serve alcohol (only sweet iced tea), but if they let you bring your own bottle and there are many vineyards on the way from Austin where you can stop and grab a few bottles. ADVICE: The BBQ is amazing and addictive and you'll end unbuttoning your pants. Although you're stuffed, finish of your plate and get another one, then ask them to box it up for you and you'll have lunch for tomorrow(Texas barbecue does miracles for hangovers).
