Without a doubt, the nicest area to have lunch or dinner (always early) in Edinburgh. Just a few steps away from the Royal Mile, the medieval houses in the square have restaurants and pubs that are always crowded. Also, you can see the oldest pub in Edinburgh, the White Hart Inn, from the year 1700.
