Incredible hidden gem
The Museo de los Concilios y la Cultura Visigoda is one of the most amazing and criminally-unknown places to visit in Toledo. Seriously: after having visited some of the city’s more famous landmarks like the Cathedral, I can say that few left me as completely blown away as this museum.
The museum is located in located in the 13th-century Iglesia de San Román, a medieval church built over a pre-existing Mosque in the Spanish Mudejar style (a Moorish-influenced style popular in Spain in the period after the Reconquista). As it was once a mosque, the interior is filled with massive Caliphate-style arches reminiscent of those in the Mosque of Cordoba and gorgeous stucco work. However, the highlight are the murals. I’ve never seen anything like it in Spain.
Every square inch of the museum’s interior is covered in murals depicting kings, bishops, angels, Biblical scenes, and geometric motifs, all in surprisingly good condition given the age of the church (make sure to pay special attention to the figures drawn on the interior of the arches). As for the museum pieces, they’re mostly artifacts and ceremonial pieces from the Visigoth era but, to be frank, I was way less interested in the artifacts on display than in the structure itself.
I wonderful surprise and defiantly one of the coolest things I saw in Toledo. 100% recommended.
