Pub named after famous pirate
The pub is a bit hidden on the main street of Wapping and there's almost no clue that the pub is really open since there's no sign or menu available outside. In fact the pub is located behind the facade on a paved road.
The most remarkable thing about the pub is it's location right on the Thames. You can enjoy the magnificent views of passing ships and buildings on the opposite bank from the terrace or by looking out the windows. It's quite relaxing if you avoid the peak hours. The interior of the pub is designed with old wood and tables that have maps and stamps of the old London port.
This pub gets its name from Captain William Kidd Scottish, a merchant seaman who owned boats in the New York in the late seventeenth century. Captain Kidd was a Pirate Hunter but later became a pirate himself. The most interesting story about the captain is his interesting trial in parliament and his execution in the Wapping neighbourhood.
In the first attempt to hang him the rope broke and had to be hung again. They left the body under water for three tides to make sure the captain was dead after what his body smeared in tar to preserve it and hang it in Tilbury (external port town in London) as a warning to other pirates. At the time people believed that Captain Kidd had buried treasure hidden on some remote beach, which carried on the sailor's legend and led to books like Stevenson's classic Mysterious Island.
