A taste of home
So you've been traveling around Sri Lanka for weeks and while rice and curry and hoppers are delicious, maybe you're craving a hearty Western meal washed down by a liter or two of robust German beer. Well, the Bavarian German Restaurant just a few steps from Galle Face Green is a welcome discovery.
The restaurant is surprisingly cozy, full of dark wood tables and secluded booths, and the clientele seems to be a mix of British businessmen, Anglophile Sri Lankans, and the stray tourist looking for a break from the country's potent mix of coconut and spice.
The food is excellent. We ordered the sausage platter and the broccoli/cauliflower pie, a supremely satisfying mix of vegetables and creamy bechemel baked under perfectly crisp crust. The rest of the menu is mainly German and features staples like burgers or roasted pork knuckles with mashed potatoes.
