A famous building
Designed by Inigo Jones for King James 1 and completed in 1622, the Banqueting House is the only surviving part of Whitehall Palace, having escaped the fire of 1698 that destroyed the rest of the building. It was originally used for state ceremonies, theater and masquerade balls. It consists of one room on two levels, with Rubens paintings adorning the ceiling. Today it is a famous building in London which attracts many tourists, and can be used for official receptions and private parties. King Charles I was executed here.
