Tanners Square (Huidenvettersplein)

Cuando nos encontramos en el muelle del Rosario de la ciudad de Brujas (en Rozenhoedkaai), si nos dirigimos un poco a la derecha según miramos al canal, encontraremos la entrada a una pequeña placita llena de belleza. Un lugar muy tranquilo, como apartado del resto de la ciudad, donde varias terracitas permiten al viajero descansar un rato. Se trata de la plaza de los curtidores (Huidenvettersplein), un gremio muy importante allá por el siglo XVII. Esta plaza se encuentra al lado del mercado de pescado y en ella también se vendían las piezas capturadas, aunque solían ser las más baratas -de río-. Justo en el medio hay una columna con dos pequeños leones encima y entre ambos sujetan el escudo del gremio de los curtidores. Según parece a su lado había otra y entre las dos columnas colocaban las básculas para pesar el pescado. En la antigüedad, cuentan, que se mezclaban los olores del mercado del pescado y de la piel que curtían los artesanos, lo que creaba una atmósfera casi irrespirable. Y una estatua que hay en la esquina de uno de los edificios lo atestigua con su cara de no soportar el olor. Justo en la misma plaza se encuentra el edificio que albergó al sede de estos trabajadores del cuero, hoy convertido en museo pegado a un hotel. Además, las terracitas que se agolpan en la otra acera de la plaza crean un ambiente único, relajado, ideal para tomar un café o un refresco viendo cruzar a la gente de una esquina a otra, pues sólo tiene dos entradas, una por Steenhouwersdijk y otra por el muelle del rosario. En cada entrada hay un negocios de visitas en barca. Según cuentan, la plaza data de mediados del siglo XVI, lo que queda muy patente en las construcciones, aunque hay que decir que están muy bien cuidadas y restauradas, conservando su “toque” de época. Todas son bajas, de no más de tres pisos y todas ellas mantiene su suelo empedrado tan clásico y de la época. Realmente un rinconcit muy agraable de la ciudad de Brujas que no se aleja para nada de la ruta turística, es más, se encuentra al lado del lugar más fotografiado, el muelle del Rosario ya comentado. Merece la pena darse una vuelta y tomarse algo con calma.
