Quality, treatment and local atmosphere
Balquhidder is a tiny village on the way to the Highlands where the famous Rob Roy MacGregor spent the last years of his life and was buried next to his wife and later with their children. There, among the clouds, fog, lakes and mountains is one of the most famous hotels in the area - Kings House. Next to it is a tavern - the most charming restaurant I've seen and enjoyed in a long time. It is small, clad in stone and wood and has a cozy fireplace for when it's cold that gives it lots of charm. There are very few tables and even less space, some local conversation, plus a huge shotgun above the fireplace (they swear that it belonged to Rob Roy himself) and 2 swords crossed above the bar - this place overflows with personality on all sides.
To all this, add the good selection of beer and a meal mountain - venison stew, sauteed mushrooms, cream of vegetable, wild boar and trout or salmon from local rivers and lakes. Most visitors are surprised by the price as it's much lower than you might expect for the quality, treatment and local atmosphere.
