you're so elated that you can't stop jumping
It's 10 hours on an overnight train from Varanas to Gorakhpur, then a 3 hour taxi ride with several others to Sunauli. It's the end of the India trip and the start of the Nepalese adventure. But first you have to go through the chaotic immigration office and passports are stamped, trying to move between trucks, rickshaws, bicycles and an amazing crowd to the Nepalese border. After months of traveling through India, the uncontrolled Sunauli will drive you crazy to the point of exasperation. Of course once you get to the Nepalese office - it's much quieter and orderly than the Indian- you're so elated that you can't stop jumping, even if you have a heavy backpack, you have not slept in so many hours, you're hungry and dying of heat.
Finally, the crossing Sunauli (they say it's the best!) Is an adventure in itself. A tip: Do not leave the immigration office without checking that they've given you back YOUR passport. In the confusion they gave me a different one. Suddenly I was no longer an Argentinian girl but a Danish boy...
