The shelter of the castle
Stonehaven, its very name reveals its foundation (Stone = Stone and Haven = Refuge - The refuge of the stone). Stonehaven was caused by the existence of Dunnottar Castle, famous for being on a cliff or rock. People without noble origin, the general people, were mostly fishermen and founded this village in the shelter of the castle (in the bay just north of it). Today it is a beautiful town full of charm, it has a beautiful coastline and a historic harbor, which could be an alternative you are visiting the Aberdeen area. The tourist information center is as efficient as it is interesting. In August 2010, Stonehaven was voted by visitors as the best seaside town in Scotland, which exemplifies the charm of this location.
