St.Katharine's Docks

12 reviews of St.Katharine's Docks

Just a step from London Bridge

St. Katherine's Docks is behind the London Bridge. It's funny, despite being one step away from tourists you'll find a quiet place to stroll and enjoy its beauty without the burden of crowds. To get there just turn right at the end of London Bridge, where the Tower of London is, and you'll find an idyllic location within the city. These docks, with 1000 years of history, were rehabilitated and turned into one of the world's most picturesque waterfronts. Take a walk along the docks, cross bridges, enjoy restaurants overlooking the river, have a coffee or enjoy events that are held there. And finally

One last recommendation, at the end of the pier, there's a fountain with dolphins from which you can take a nice picture of London Bridge.

St.Katharine's Docks

I honestly think that this is a must see during a visit to London, especially if you are lucky enough to enjoy good weather during your stay. It is a real delight to enjoy a beer while watching all the big ships passing by. It is an idyllic spot attached to the Tower Bridge!

Nice walk

It is a nice walk between docks. It is nice after a visit to the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. I recommend eating at Zizzi Ristorante.

The springs of Santa Catalina is located right next to the Tower Bridge (Tower Bridge) and The Tower of London, this area was the center of commerce since ancient naval serving as an entry point for goods coming to the capital of different parts of the world. The name of this marina, comes from an old hospital to be erected on site and served to assist the poor merchant sailors and arrived at the docks in need of medical assistance. The use of docks acquired its peak in the eighteenth century, especially because of trade with the colonies, the Thames quickly became the center of commodity exchange in the British Empire of the time. Maritime traffic grew so much that the appearance of different loading and unloading areas appeared on the banks of the river at a frantic pace trying to manage the increasing number of goods coming to the capital congestionándolo. ST springs. Katherine's served as entry point very precious materials such as ivory, sugar, marble, wine, rubber, carpets, tea, indigo, spices and perfumes still very popular because of its price and the proximity and easy connection to the city center . The springs were very affected by the Nazi bombings of the 2nd World War suffering severe wildfires were accentuated by the flammable nature of the materials that were stored in their warehouses (especially copra). These damages, the declining naval trade and movement of the springs from the center of London have led to the commercial decline of these docks and warehouses. To prevent the complete loss of the area, the springs have been the center of an urban regeneration project creating homes, restaurants, shops and hotels that have the current face of the springs, more focused on recreation and leisure in the trade.

St Katherine's Dock is an inland port built beside the River Thames, which takes its name from the old hospital of St. Katherine. This was built in the twelfth century not far. The industrial docks were built in the 1820s, with three separate ponds. The ships enter through an airlock, which still operates today, although the place has become a marina. You can see the most beautiful boats in London, some are antique wooden boats, very well kept, and others are simply yachts that come to spend some time before going down to the Mediterranean. Around the ponds were organized warehouses, where goods and goods arrived before entry in the capital. These were completed in 1852. The place was completely renovated in the 60s and in the 90s to now be a trendy place with hotels, have, offices and restaurants around the marina. The Lock means the lock, and is behind Guoman Hotel, at the height of Tower Bridge. The low and high tide of the River Thames in a difference of 10 meters in height of the water! Then this sluice was built in order to create, behind her, a marina sheltered from the maread. When a boat wants to reach St Katharine Docks, you first have to go through this lock, it will raise from the height of the river to the height of the port. The water level is regulated by opening and closing the lock gates. Before I drove a man with a control office, but now you just have to get a key to open and close the lock. It's a nice place to walk around there are plenty of cafes and restaurants.

Marina in the city

Port de plaisance en pleine ville

Excellent
St Katherine Docks have something magical. This is done through small passages, not always clearly marked. Hailed by old ships, it really does not seem to be in London, in the city, it is frankly exotic! We will ride the long docks, hair to the winds. With a little luck, you will see the lock function to let out or enter a boat. The square in front of the old inn is very nice when it's sunny. Even though the place is small, it feels good and you can easily stroll a few hours. The restaurants that line the docks are nice and affordable. Generally, we continue our tour by joining the River Thames and across the Tower Bridge, to continue to Oxo Tower. A beautiful spring ride!

It seems incredible to find a port in London, but in its streets to discover this small sports boats pier. The harbor is surrounded by buildings, so that it is unusual to find this place. Among them are residential areas, a hotel and several restaurants, coffee shops including Starbucks. We greatly enjoyed our walk and enjoy the scenery.

The old port of London

Recomendado: a todas horas
