Statue of King Sebastião

The Statue of King Sebastião is in the center of Plaza Gil Eannes, opposite the main facade of the Town Hall. It's a modern statue (and personally I found appalling), built in 1973 by the artist João Cutileiro. It represents King Sebastian, who granted the title of city to Lagos in 1573. A myth has been created around this Portuguese King as he disappeared in 1578 on a military mission to Morocco, but the people refused to accept his disappearance and continue to believe that he would return on a foggy day.
