Ancient
This is possibly one of the most ancient areas in the Boldons area. In West Boldon, there is the church of San Nicolas, which was built on a hill in Anglo-Saxon times. It dates from the late 12th or early 13th centuries near the river Don. One of the church's main features is that it has hardly been reconstructed or maintained, leaving a glimpse of the typical appearance of churches from that era. They were never very tall or large, had a single tower and were almost always surrounded by a tiny cemetery, because the town centres were much smaller. Some headstones show the degradation suffered by the area's inclement weather, with illegible inscriptions that have been eroded.
