St. Mary\'s Church of Les Neus

2 reviews of St. Mary\'s Church of Les Neus

A Sailor's Church

I love the sailor churches, in Galicia there are a few. The Port de la Selva is gorgeous but not very old. It's from the first half of the twentieth century, and was expanded and modernized in 1962.

I went on a Sunday morning and the church was almost empty. I'm guessing that the mass had been earlier; we know that sailors are early risers.

There is a Latin cross and the side chapels have no altars, but yet they have the images on pedestals. The oldest image is the gothic style image of San Pedro, from the 15th century. Other interesting images are those of the Virgen de las Nieves (patron of the Port de la Selva) and the chapel of the Virgen del Carmen (patron saint of sailors) with a collection of figures.

From the Baroque period

The church of Santa Maria de les Neus, is from the Baroque period and has a Gothic sculpture from the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. The facade is sparsely decorated, is white and has a bell tower with a clock. Is very close to the beach.
