The shield of Athletic de Bilbao
In the high part of the city near the castle, the bell-towers of the Church of Santa María la Mayor (12th-16th centuries) strike your attention. The temple was built above the ruins of one of Trujillo’s old mosques and is done in the Gothic style, except for the tower and bell-tower, which are both Romanesque.
Inside, you’ll find an altarpiece with 25 tablets by the 15th century painter Fernando Gallego, a plateresque choral area, and the sepulchers of Trujillo noblemen. As a curiosity, you can see the shield of the Athletic de Bilbao football team sculpted on the corner of the eaves of the tower, a touch added by local stonemason Antonio Serván, known locally as “El Rana” (“the frog”) after the worker took part in building the team’s stadium.
