5 reviews of Piazza del Risorgimento

lively neighbourhood

The Piazza di Risorgimento is on the street that's visible from the Portal del Ángel that leads to the Vatican. It is a very lively neighbourhood, not only because of the tourists, but also because the Romans pass through as well. In the plaza there are typical Roman cafes and ice cream parlours. It is a place that is always full of people because it is so close to the Vatican City and St. Peter's Basilica. The square is named after the Risorgimento monument that honors the unification of the entire Italian peninsula. During the Roman Empire, Italy was united politically, but empires, wars and conquests and shared territories led to a divided Italy.

The premises of unification started in 1847, but the declaration of the Kingdom of Italy was not until March 17, 1861.
