Square National Anthem

The square, which has remained unchanged for centuries, currently houses the Parish Church of San Salvador. The square housed an ancient temple dating back to 1514, no less.

The current square dates back to the year 1740 and was one of those dquares that survived the great fire of 1869, when citizens, sensing an imminent Spanish reoccupation, preferred to set fire to the city than to see it fall into enemy hands. The square itself is famous for being the place where the National Anthem of Cuba was first sung, the Bayamesa, in 1868. The site chosen was not accidental, as it was the birthplace of Perucho Figueredo, who was the composer of the famous hymn that begins with this harangue: "In combat run bayameses".
