a historic monument
It is believed that during the period that Julius Caesar conquered France, here he created a fountain and a water supply for the city, the "Vesontio" of water. However, it is not 100 per cent certain. Until the French Revolution, it was placed in the church of San Juan Bautista, which was destroyed between 1794 and 1797. It was Auguste Castan, the librarian and archaeology enthusiast who started the first excavations, and discovered the source and 8 times more Corinthian columns. This square is a historic monument by decree from July 12, 1886.
