Priceless collection
The Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, as its name suggests, is a permanent collection of stained glass windows that can be found at Navy Pier in Chicago. I have to admit that I wasn't particularly excited about visiting it, but in the end, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
The space, which is freely accessible, occupies a good portion of the ground floor of Navy Pier. If you're not familiar with the area, you should know that Navy Pier has a mixture of different styles and is full of restaurants and other attractions. However, some parts can seem a bit tacky or kitschy, so this museum is a real haven of peace if you're feeling overwhelmed by it all.
Since this space is occasionally visited by herds of children and adolescents, the windows are protected by thick bulletproof glass. The collection ranges from the Middle Ages to contemporary art and documents the various techniques used in this art. There are 150 pieces in total, some of considerable size and a few by famous names like Frank Lloyd Wright and Tiffany. The value of the collection is priceless and although the audience may not always be appreciative, the central location means that it regularly receives thousands of visitors.
