A long, glorious past
The Slovenian Philharmonic is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, with a long and glorious past. Gustav Mahler was the conductor in the year 1881, and alumni have included Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, Branz, Haydn, and Paganini. It was founded by the merger of previous musical societies, who's origins were lost in the eighteenth century. Since the late nineteenth century, the Philharmonic is located in a very beautiful place, right next to the building of the University of Ljubljana, with views of Congress Square, where the regional theatre once stood until it was destroyed by fire.
