Skating route

Excellent

Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Friesland, it can befound in the north of the Netherlands and it has about 96,578 inhabitants (2009). The city boasts of seven museums and 620 Rijksmonumenten (this means monuments recognized by the state). The city is also well known as the point of departure and arrival of the Elfstedentocht (which is the route of the eleven cities), an ice skating route of more than 200 km long that passes through the eleven cities in Friesland. The tour was originally only skating, but currently there are bicycle paths, boats and walking paths also offered. Geertruida Margaretha Zelle (Mata Hari) was born in Leeuwarden on August 7, 1876.

Within Oldehoofsterkerkhof, the Leaning Tower of Oldehove is perched on the roofs. When construction began, which was in 1529 it was supposed tombe the highest in the Netherlands, but the foundation began to sink and the works stopped three years later. Since then the tower continues to be incomplete and slanted. Recently, it the plaza has been renovated, an area which is in front of the slanted tower. There has been built an underground car park and pavement and there are columns there indicating what would have been the old church of San Vito.
