Sinis Peninsula and Mal di Ventre Island

Honestly, the name isn't all that attractive (it translates to Seasick Island); I suppose it is derived from the sensation of nausea provoked by travelling over the often-rough seas in the area or (more probably) as a corruption of "mal viento" (bad winds) due to the heavy winds in the area which cause massive waves which sometimes cut off the island for days at a time.

That being said, don't let the name's meteorological doom-and-gloom put you off; the island is a destination that shouldn't be missed. The waters are crystal-clear in a way that's unusual even for Sardinia, an island known for its beautiful transparent waters.

The Sinis Peninsula is around 19km long and is located between the Gulf of Oristano and the Bay of Is Arenas. In terms of marine life, it’s a very important area that’s home to lobsters, sea bream, toothfish, and turtles, and the coastline of rocky cliffs provides a beautiful landscape. The famous ruins of ancient Punic-Roman city of Tharros are also located here on Cape San Marco, along with the famous lighthouse and defensive towers. The shallow waters range from turquoise to emerald green and the area is generally sandy with the exception of a few rocky coves.

If you visit the area, you can see the two sides of the Sardinian seas: the sea at certain points of the peninsula is generally rougher than in other areas of the island, but you can also find protected bays where the waters are calm and crystal-clear.

You can also get there by boat. It’s a very wild and natural part of Sardinia and is perfect if you’re looking to get away from civilization for a few hours.
