Sacred Men

The shadus are Hindus ve have chosen asceticism as a lifestyle. Moving away from needs, vices and pleasures humans are able to reach a higher state of consciousness and become worthy of nirvana. They are considered holy men and live on what people feed them. They usually wear long orange robes, although differences do exist with some choosing to be naked or have their bodies and faces covered with ash or paint. Though not only found in Varanasi, many come here for the identity of the city to the god Shiva.

They are in all over India, but Varanasi or Benares is one of the sites where you see them. The sadhus are men who seek enlightenment through detachment, penance and prayer. Stripped of all his property, live on charity and generally travel from one side to another, constantly pilgrimage. There are countless kinds of sadhus, who adhere to a particular school or branch of Hinduism. Also, especially in places where tourists flock there fake godmen, who are 'disguised' and aim to win a coin through the charade. However, in the fascinating ghats of the holy city is easy to recognize a fake one real sadhu. Just observe their behavior, the devotion with which they make their ablutions and take their holy bath. Seeing them is impressive. Almost always dressed in orange, the colorful painted face and hair and beards long, wandering through life with eyes averted, as if they were no longer in this world.
