Sfântu Gheorghe

Gheorghe Sfantu means St. George, and is a town in central Romania, in the Transylvania region. It is built on the Olt River, surrounded by mountains. Most of the inhabitants, more than three quarters, are Szeklers, a people came from Asia Minor and the Hungarians, and speak a language similar to Hungarian. The rest are Romanians. Gheorghe sfantu is one of the oldest towns in Transylvania, the first colony arrived in the early fourteenth century. San Jorge, who gave his name to the town, was the patron of the church. The Szeklers have remained in the region quite isolated from the outside world, mingling with the Romanians as little as possible and thus still speak a language very different from Romanian.

You can visit the church, the market and the bazaar here which you'll find it next to the clock tower. Gheorghe sfantu is the first village in a particular region of Romania, the country of the Szeklers, you can explore from there staying in one of the shelters in the village.
