Amazing architecture
This great store, named after Harry Gordon Selfridge (born in Wisconsin, USA, in 1850) was opened on March 15, 1909. It was designed by the architect and engineer Daniel Hudson Burnham Yorker (1846/1912), a true representative of the Chicago School. Francis Swales, another American who studied under Jean-Louis Pascal at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, made all the ornamental details. The glass windows have metal frames finished with bronze ornaments articulated with short pillars, and the corners are enriched with garlands. The giant colonnade consists of fluted Ionic columns. The original design of the project was provided by the London sculptor Gilbert Bayes (1872-1953).
