A beautiful autumn

If I had to define the Sierra de Gata in only a few words, I’d say it’s a paradise for hikers.

I’d never heard of it until a friend recommended it to us.

The mountains are dotted with villages like San Martín de Trevejo, Gata, Robledillo de Gata, Acebo, and Villamiel. All of them share certain traits like quaint homes and churches. There are well-marked trails between the villages and they’re a maximum of 4-5km long so it’s not too difficult.

Also, as a side note, the inhabitants of the villages also use the trails to go from one village to another so as to not use the car.

The scenery ranges from pines to chestnut trees to oaks. It’s all very natural and there’s no trash anywhere.

I think it’s a place you could visit throughout the entire year except in winter when the roads are tricky due to the ice and snow. But the colors in autumn were gorgeous and in summer there are lots of little natural pools where you can cool off.

San Martín de Trevejo and Trevejo

Excellent

Sierra de Gata is another of the sub-regions in the province of Cáceres. It’s pressed against the Portuguese border, just south of Salamanca province. It has various villages that have been declared to be Historical Complexes and still preserve their traditional architecture. The natural surroundings are also amazing. I’d recommend a visit.

You'll want to stay and live here

This summer we were on vacation for a week in the Sierra de Gata. It’s surprisingly unknown and we had a marvelous time there. The numerous natural pools really set this place apart, especially considering the hot weather when we were there. I’m from Huelva and there are some Paradise-like beaches not too far away, but we were looking for something different. We decided to follow the natural pool trail and we couldn’t have been any happier with that decision!.

We started the route at the Perales del Puerto natural pool. It was very big and delightful to jump in for a dip, taking in the Roman bridge that goes over it and the lush vegetation surrounding it. We had a great afternoon there and enjoyed a perfect temperature, while the rest of Spain was under excessive temperature warnings. The Sierra de Gata is like an oasis in the middle of scortching Extramdura, with its green mountains and the fresh water rivers flowing through this luxurious part of our country. We decided to stay in Acebo for the night, a small town with streets and houses built of stone. It was a dreamy place. The people were tremendously nice. Acebo itself has several natural pools that we also visited. We we got up we decided to walk through the local Buddhist community, Lalita, which is surrounded by incredible scenery.

On the way to Robledillo, we stopped at Cadalso. We loved the natural pool there so much that we decided to go back to it later because of the beautiful sounds, scents, and, above all, for the refreshing, beautiful water.

We spent two days in Robledillo de Gata, a precious town. It’s an Artistic and Cultural Heritage Site, but hardly was visited by tourists, which surprised us. It’s a calm, peaceful place, surrounded by the music of flowing wáter, with the smell of mint, lavender, pennyroyal, and fig trees floating through the air… We stayed in the Casa Manadero cabin (highly recommended!), and spent two unforgettable days there. The natural pool in Robledillo is a truly special place, with a waterfall of ice-cold water falling down. Each town or pool that we visited tempted us to stay there because we didn’t think we’d be able to find a better one. Good thing we decided to continue on our path, as we found a Paradise on Earth in Gata. The pool is indescribable. You have to see it in person and go for a swim to understand what we saw. Words don’t do it justice. We spent two quick days there, as our trip came to its end.

We had a great time on the trip, as did our dog Turco, who might have had the most fun of all of us – jumping across the rivers from rock to rock and swimming in the clean, crystal clear waters of the pools.

We really want to go back because there’s still a ton to see.

Travelers, it’s totally worth the trip to see these sites and enjoy the fresh water in the Sierra. The only dangerous thing is that you’ll want to spend the rest of your lives in these towns and not return to reality. I’m sure we’ll go back soon to see everything we missed.
