1 review of São Neutel Fortress

Surrounded by a moat

The fort of São Neutel is one of three defensive fortresses in Chaves (the others are the castle and strong S. Francisco). It is on São Neutel hill, north of the city, directly between Infantry Regiment barracks and the municipal football stadium. It's tricky to get there, since there are no markers and in terms of information and tourism does not appear, being only the historical, but it's easy to get there: From downtown, take the Two Allies Avenue to the Combatentes Great War roundabout, straight through it taking Nuno Alvares Avenue and at the next roundabout, turn right. The fort can be visited only on the outside.

It is a massive fortress, built on the model of French Vauban construction. It has a square with a star, with bastions at the corners, and is surrounded by a moat and two walled with huge granite walls seven meters high. It was built by General Andrade e Sousa in 1664. Inside the complex there is the chapel of Our Lady of Brotas. This fort is listed as a National Monument.
